Tooru Fujisawa has launched a new spin-off series on Great Teacher Onizuka on the online manga platform Comiplex on Oct 18, 2024.

The plot of the new spin-off manga centers around the vice principal Hiroshi Uchiyamada of the Kissho Academy, and is titled ‘Great Teacher Uchiyamada – GTU – Ikari no Death Yamada‘.

GTU, which is an interdimensional survival series, is described as:

Hiroshi Uchiyamada, the vice principal of Tokyo Kichijo Academy, is a middle-class teacher struggling between his subordinates and students. At home, he’s not well understood either, with his dog Eikichi being his only companion. One summer day, Uchiyamada visits Kabukicho to search for a runaway student. Little does he know, this marks the beginning of a massive nightmare awaiting him.

GTO is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Tooru Fujisawa. It was originally serialized in Kodansha’s shonen manga magazine Weekly Shōnen Magazine from January 1997 to February 2002, with its chapters collected in 25 tankōbon volumes.

A sequel manga series, titled GTO: 14 Days In Shonan, ran in Weekly Shonen Magazine from June 2009 to September 2011. Another sequel, titled GTO: Paradise Lost, serialized from April 2014 to October 2024.

 In June 2021, Fujisawa had stated that GTO: Paradise Lost would be the last manga in the GTO series.

GTO manga has also inspired multiple adaptations. These include a 12-episode Japanese TV drama that aired from July to September 1998, a live-action film directed by Masayuki Suzuki released in December 1999, and a 43-episode anime series produced by Pierrot, which aired on Fuji TV from June 1999 to September 2000. Additionally, a second live-action series was broadcast in 2012, followed by two more in 2014.

A revival series, titled GTO Revival, is released on April 1, 2024.
