Shivamogga: Health minister Dinesh Gundu Rao on Tuesday inspected areas affected by Kyasanur Forest Disease (KFD) in Aralagodu village in Sagar taluk, Shivamogga district. The village recorded 22 fatalities from KFD since 2019.

Speaking to reporters, Rao confirmed that a new vaccine is under development and should be ready by 2026. He explained that the existing KFD vaccine has lost its effectiveness. The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) is committed to delivering a new vaccine, currently being developed at a Hyderabad research facility with Rs 10 crore funding from CSR initiatives.

Rao announced plans to provide complimentary medical care for KFD patients and confirmed that affected regions would receive a mobile medical unit within a month. He indicated that discussions with local representatives and MLAs would take place to address the situation.

Addressing queries about the Covid-19 irregularities during the previous BJP administration, Rao confirmed an ongoing investigation, and said that appropriate action would be taken based on the findings. The cabinet would convene a meeting this week to discuss the matter, he said.
