New Delhi: In a major revelation, the doctor with access to the autopsy report of the trainee post-graduate doctor, who was found brutally raped and murdered on the RG Kar Hospital premises, has refuted the initial claims of the Kolkata police that only one person was involved in the crime.
As per the TV reports, Dr Subarna Goswami, who accessed the autopsy report, spoke about the incident and refuted Kolkata police’s version.
Dr Goswami said that the extent of the injuries on the body of the deceased suggested the more than one person was involved in the crime. He said that excess amount of semen found in vagina cannot be of one person and there is a strong possibility that there could be more than one person involved in the sexual assault.
The cops had arrested Sanjay Roy, a 35-year-old civic volunteer, in less than 24 hours after the crime came to light stressing that only one person was responsible.
On morning Friday, August 9, at around 7.30am, the brutalised semi-nude body of a 31-year-old second-year post-graduate trainee doctor in respiratory medicine was discovered in a seminar hall on the third floor of RG Kar Medical College‘s emergency building.
31-year-old doctor began her day at the busy respiratory medicine OPD around 10 am on Thursday. She admitted six patients to unit 11-A of her department. At approximately 3 pm, she reached the indoor ward of her department on the third floor of the emergency building.
According to a colleague, “She did rounds to check on patients admitted in the ward and was busy in patient care till late into the night except for spending a few minutes to have dinner around 11pm.”
As a second-year PGT doctor, she was the most senior doctor caring for patients during the night, assisted by two first-year PGTs, interns, and house staff. Senior doctors are available on call for emergencies. As the unit’s charge, she worked until 2am on Friday, tending to patients. Her duty would have ended at 4pm on Friday.
“She wanted to rest a bit and also study and hence headed to the seminar room after telling her juniors to call her in case of any exigency. And that was the last time she interacted with colleagues,” a colleague said.
PGTs and junior doctors often use the department’s sleep lab as a rest room when no patients are present, as it is air-conditioned. However, on Thursday night, a patient was admitted for a sleep study, so she went to the seminar room instead.
A senior colleague mentioned, “She also sometimes calls me and other seniors who are on call in case of any emergency during the night shift. Last night no call came from her as there was no problem with any patient. We were relaxed till we got the shocking information on Friday morning.”
